Full transcription of Ernest Pilgrim’s letter home from France dated 17th June 1916:

My Dearest M and F

     Just a few lines to you in answer to your kind and welcome letter which I was very pleased to receive and also to by it that you, and all at home are in the very best of health and I am very pleased to tell you that I am the same up to the present, well my Dearest Mother I am very pleased to tell you that received the Sigarrettes quite safe, and I thank you very much for them, I am very sorry I did not tell you in my last letter, also Mother Dear I am very pleased to tell you that I had a letter from Sister Lily the same time I had yours.  I also had a letter from Mr. Sandells (or Landells) I also had a letter from L/Cpl H.W.Gibbons in the 9th Norfolks but I cannot bring him to mind, unless it is pitty Dear or Harry Gibbons from Sudbury.  I expect that is who it is, Well Mother Dear I am very pleased to tell you that the weather is a lot better than it has been this last week, well my Dear Mother and Father I was very pleased to here that brother Fred has been home again, I should very much like to get a letter from him so he would let me know if he received my photo or not, but never mind I am still a live and that all he cares about me I can see it quite plain now, he wanted me to get him into the Norfolks I told him he was better off where he was, since then he have not temted to write.  Well Dear Mother and Father I cannot think of anymore to say this time so good by for the present hoping to here from you soon.  I remain yours for everloving and Truest Son Ernest.

My Dearest Mother and Father

     Just a few lines to you in answer to your kind and welcome letter which I was very pleased to receive and also to see by it that you and all at home are in the very best of health and I am very pleased to tell you that I am the same up to the present, well my Dear Mother and Father I am pleased to tell you that the weather is still very good, also my Dear Brother I hope it is the same in England,  well Dear Mother I am very pleased to Say that I had a letter from sister Lily the other day She is quite well and sends her very best love to all at home, well Dear Mother I saw Fred Boggis the day, he is a Sergt.  I believe he has been home wounded so he tells me.  He is quite well and sends his best respects to all, well Dear Mother and Father please send my very best respects to Brother Fred and all when you write to them, also give my very best respects to all in the Street, well my Dear Mother and Father I cannot think of anymore to say this time only kiss all the Children and also Dear Dad for me, so now I must say good by for the present hoping to here from you soon  I remain yours for ever loving and Truest Son
