FOR SALE - A Non Grid-Type Logic Problem by Roger Burden Four postcards, each bearing an advertisement for something being sold, are displayed in the newsagents window. From the clues given, can you fill in on the cards shown below the item it is advertising, and the name and address of the person selling it? 1. The card on which Mr West is advertising a computer desk for sale is immediately above the one inserted by the person from Queensway. 2. The DVD player is advertised on the card immediately clockwise from the one inserted by Mr Harker from Butt Road. 3. Card C is offering a car for sale. 4. Mr Joness advertisement isnt on card D. 5. The advert placed by the person from Poplar Road bears a letter earlier in the alphabet than that which marks the card placed by the man living in Head Lane. CATEGORIES. Items Offered: car, computer desk, DVD player, refrigerator. Vendors Names: Dawson, Harker, Jones, West. Vendors Addresses: Broom Street, Butt Road, Head Lane, Queensway. FOR SALE - SOLUTION. Since card C offers the car for sale (3), from clue 2, the card inserted by Harker from Butt Road cant be card D. Nor can Wests card offering the computer desk (1), and clue 4 rules out Jones, so card D must have been placed by Dawson. West doesnt live in (1) or Broom Street (5), so must live in Head Lane. Therefore he didnt place card A (5), and, from clue 1, must have placed card B, and Dawson, who placed card D, must live in Queensway. From clue 5, the person from Broom Street must have placed card A, so, by elimination, Harker from Butt Road must have placed card C. Now, by elimination, the Broom Street resident must be Jones, and, from clue 2, hes selling a DVD player, which leaves Dawson from Queensway selling a refrigerator. IN SUMMARY Card A, DVD player, Jones, Broom Street. Card B, computer desk, West, Head Lane. Card C, car, Harker, Butt Road. Card D, refrigerator, Dawson, Queensway. |
